Thousands of UK houses empty more than 10 years

UK 13,000 homes empty 10 years

Nearly 13,000 homes have been left standing empty for at least a decade across Great Britain, according to new figures

Data released to the Lib Dems, under Freedom of Information laws, suggested 12,889 properties have been vacant for at least 10 years.

The figures suggested 46,964 homes have been empty for five years or more and 313,792 homes have been empty for more than six months.

The details come after Charity Shelter said 127,000 children in England will be homeless over the Christmas period.

Former Lib Dem leader Tim Farron said the figures represented a "national emergency".

The party has called for legislation to allow local authorities to increase council tax by up to 500 per cent where properties are left vacant long-term - with the revenues reinvested to build new homes for the community or to invest in local services.

Mr Farron said: "It is impossible to imagine how hard it is, especially at this time of year, for the tens of thousands of children struggling to get by without somewhere to call home.

"This housing crisis is a national emergency. Tory ministers should hang their heads in shame. Urgent action is needed now to ensure every child has the security of a warm bed."

He added: "Communities up and down the country are being torn apart because affluent owners are treating these properties as financial assets.

"Instead, these homes could be turned into affordable places to live for some of the most vulnerable people in our society.

"As soon as Parliament returns, Liberal Democrats will be banging on the Government's door to demand councils are given the powers and resources we set out in our manifesto to bring empty homes back into use."

Many years ago WE (my people) started Croydon Short Life User Group (SLUG)

At a Council meeting WE confronted the thyen councillor for housing, pointing out the large number of empty properties in Croydon, some of which actually belonged to the council itself

WE started off by squatting in the empty properties, sadly as often happens, people joined us who were more interested in getting their face in the media than helping others, they were selling donated good and keeping the money.

A local councillor who offered to help, actually placed her own daughter in one of our short life properties so that she could jump the housing que

WE were behind the Croydon lodgers scheme, encouraging people to give a home to a young person

The are a great many empty government owned properties including ex military properties

Many properties on estates are illegally sublet

There are also thousands of empty properties on violent housing estates

Throw out the problem families and there will be more than enough homes for those in need

The houses are there, sitting empty, waiting for people to be brave enough to move in
